“Katie, I’m here to say that it is absolutely not true.”

From True Memoirs of an International Assassin.

After spending so long writing his action novel, Sam (Kevin James) has finally ironed out all the details, finished the story, and even picked the perfect signature line. While the hero in his book, Mason, is a fearless, highly-skilled assassin, Sam’s life is the complete opposite, gaining inspiration solely from stories of a spy known as the Ghost told by his retired analyst friend, Amos (Ron Rifkin). Finally ready to have his book published, Sam looks for a publisher for his work of fiction, Memoirs of an International Assassin, and he finally finds a willing publisher in Kylie (Kelen Coleman). When Kylie changes the name to True Memoirs of an International Assassin and markets the book as nonfiction, it becomes an overnight bestseller, but it also places Sam at odds with Amos because he used details in his book that were supposed to be confidential. The book also quickly sparks the interest of international criminals from the Ghost’s past. When Venezuelan gorilla leader El Toro (Andy Garcia) and his army (including Maurice Compte) kidnap Sam, they hire him to kill the president of Venezuela (Kim Coates), and Sam doesn’t think his day can get any worse until a drug lord named Masovich (Andrew Howard) kidnaps him and hires him to kill El Toro. When Sam is rescued by DEA agent, Rosa (Zulay Henao), he expects her to rescue him, but instead she wants to use Sam to bring down the corrupt leadership. Then when two CIA agents (Rob Riggle and Leonard Earl Howze) inform the Venezuelan President and his top general, Ruiz (Yul Vazquez), of Sam’s presence in the country, Ruiz contacts Sam and hires him to kill Masovich. Suddenly stuck with all the conflicting contracts and no desire to kill anyone, Sam must figure out a way to escape the country alive without killing anyone.

This comedy manages to laugh at all the action-spy genre norms, but in a way that is unique and hilarious. James leads a talented cast in a surprisingly complex, but easy to follow story. True Memoirs of an International Assassin is a non-stop adventure that is a must-watch for comedy fans.
