From Capone.
After his arrest for tax evasion, Al Capone (Tom Hardy) was released in 1931 after serving ten years, however neurosyphilis has left him a very sick man, both mentally and physically. Before he was locked up, Capone hid ten million dollars, but his failing health has left him unable to remember where he hid the money. Allowed to live at his home in Florida where the government can watch him, the ailing gangster tries to return to the life he knew before his prison sentence. While trying to remember where he hid his fortune, Capone is plagued by illusions from his criminal past that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. While his wife, Mae (Linda Cardellini), and son (Noel Fisher) try to care for Capone while dealing with the quickly-mounting debt, his failing mental health puts a major strain on the every aspect of their life. When Capone begins to realize that he is being watched by the government, he changes from the docile-yet-unwell man he has become into a violent, unstable one. Tormented by memories and people (including Matt Dillon and Mason Guccione) from his bloody past, and his inability to distinguish between fact and fiction, Capone fights to regain control of his mind. While his doctor (Kyle MacLachlan) pushes Mae to bring in more help than the few men managing and protecting the property (including Gino Cafarelli), she opts instead for quiet. However, when Capone suffers a debilitating stroke, Mae brings in more family (Al Sapienza and Kathrine Narducci) to care for him, while the FBI’s Crawford (Jack Lowden) closes in.
Based on the final year of Capone’s life, this movie focuses on the tumultuous fall of America’s most notorious gangster. It is truly amazing to see Hardy’s transformation in every aspect of the role for his embodiment of Capone, even though it is often disturbing. This dark crime drama is intense at times in ways that will not be appealing for every viewer, however Capone offers an interesting look at the end of a legend.
