“Your father’s alive!”

From The Pilgrim’s Progress.

Long ago in a poor town ruled by an evil, unseen ruler lives a man named Christian Pilgrim (David Thorpe) who is stuck in his life of forced servitude until the disappearance of Faithful (Jonathan Keeble) pushes Christian to consider leaving.  Tasked with cleaning out Faithful’s home, Christian finds a book that tells of the past, a war to come, and a safe refuge: Celestial City.  Christian soon learns that the missing man is alive, but the town’s supervisors are hiding his escape under orders from their mysterious master (Andrew Wyncott), which pushes Christian to investigate Faithful’s disappearance more.  Spurned by his wife (Alison Pettit) and weighed down by a burden only he can see, Christian decides to leave the safety of his home and head off in search of the Celestial City.  Just outside of town, Christian meets Evangelist (John Rhys-Davies) who sees his invisible burden and tells him to follow the path straight towards the light, without being distracted.  While his friends (Andy Harrison and Tristan Beint) try to convince Christian to return home, Christian continues on his journey through swamp, hills, forests, valleys, and everything in between.  Along the way, Christian meets a wide array of characters including the distracting Worldly Wise (Chris Pavlo), the dangerous Mr. Legality (Stephen Daltry), the strong Gatekeeper (also Stephen Daltry), the wise Interpreter (Kristyn Getty), the generous Watchful (Andy Harrison), and the young Hopeful (Justin Butcher).  As his burden grows and the dangers chasing him grow worse, Christian must push through on his search for Celestial City and the salvation that he knows the city and its king will bring.

Based on John Bunyan’s novel, this movie gives life to classic allegory with humor, action, and inspiration.  The cast is solid and brings uniqueness to their individual characters, especially when coupled with the colorful and captivating animation style.  All but the youngest viewers will find The Pilgrim’s Progress to be the perfect embodiment of an amazing story.
