From Onward.
Living in a world that used to be filled with magic, Ian (Tom Holland) is struggling for a place to fit in. The shy elf has no friends beside his mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and older brother, Barley (Chris Pratt), and since he never got to meet his father, he feels like something’s missing. On his sixteenth birthday, their mom announces that she has a gift for Ian and Barley left by their dad before his death. The gift is a wizard’s staff, a visitation spell that will bring their dad back for one day, and a phoenix stone to power the spell. While Barley is unable to activate the magical staff, Ian manages to start the spell, but the phoenix stone is destroyed before they can bring back all of their dad, so the boys only have their father from the waist down and a short window to complete the spell before the magic wears off. While he’s an underachiever in most things, Barley is obsessed with the history of magic and the role playing game Quests of Yore, so he loads Ian and their dad’s legs into his van and they go to find the Manticore (Octavia Spencer) and seek her help in finding a new phoenix stone to complete the spell. Once they get a clue from the Manitcore, Barley, Ian, and Dad’s legs head off on a quest for the stone that will push Ian to learn more magic as they face a police chase from their mom’s boyfriend (Mel Rodriguez), dangerous biker pixies, driving lessons, a curse, and an adventure that neither brother could ever have expected.
This family fantasy adventure manages to create a story that has something for every viewer, regardless of age. The computer animation is breath-taking and enchanting, especially when coupled with the talented cast; leading the way, Pratt and Holland are the best possible choices to voice the brothers, which they bring to life perfectly. Onward is hilarious, heartbreaking, adventurous, unexpected, and everything wonderful viewers could ever want from a Disney/Pixar movie!
