From Aquaman.
When a woman washed up onshore, lighthouse keeper Tom (Temuera Morrison) did what any decent human would and took care of her while she was injured; Tom later learned that the woman, Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), was a princess from the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. The two fell in love and had a child, Arthur, but the arranged marriage that Atlanna had fled came to the surface searching for her so she return to Atlantis keep her family safe. Arthur (Jason Momoa) grew up not quite fitting in on land or underwater, but also using his abilities to defend the world as Aquaman. He was trained by one of his mother’s allies, Vulko (Willem Defoe), before her betrayal love of a human had her executed. As time progressed, the seven kingdoms of Atlantis drifted apart so that now King Nereus (Dolph Lundgren) is partnering with Atlanna’s second son Orm (Patrick Wilson) to lead the kingdoms in a war against the land. As Aquaman, Arthur protects humans on the sea and fights pirates (such as Michael Beach and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), but when Princess Mera (Amber Heard) arrives and begs Arthur to stop Orm from starting a war, he reluctantly agrees. Legend claims that only the one who wields a long-lost trident is the true king able to control the entire ocean. While Arthur is the firstborn, Orm is willing to do almost anything to keep his power from his illegitimate brother. Arthur and Mera embark on a journey through land and sea in search for the Trident that will allow Arthur to save both of his homes.
DC Comics seem to have no trouble making visually stunning and action-packed films, but they seem to struggle with giving characters easy-to-remember names. Momoa is amazing as Aquaman, bringing heart, humor, and heroism into his role easily; Heard is also easy to root for in her portrayal of the butt-kicking princess. Visual effect are stunning and the story doesn’t seem to drag anywhere. Both an origin story and a continuation of the events from Justice League, Aquaman is a fun movie that is sure to be a hit.
