“You may kiss the bride.”

From Overboard.

Kate (Anna Faris) is a widowed mother working several jobs, taking care of her three daughters (Hannah Nordberg, Alyvia Alyn Lind, and Payton Lepinski), and trying to study for the nursing exam, but she’s struggling.  When her carpet cleaning job sends her to the yacht of billionaire Leonardo (Eugenio Derbez) things go from bad to worse; after insulting almost everything about her, he throws her and her equipment overboard and sails off on his luxury yacht with his sister, Magdalena (Cecilia Suarez).  On the trip back to Mexico to see their dying father, an intoxicated Leo falls overboard and washes up back on the Oregon coast with no memory of who he is.  In an attempt to take over their father’s company, Magdalena leaves Leo and returns home with his “ashes.”  When Kate hears that Leo washed up without his memory, she  decides to take the advice of her friend (Eva Longoria) and uses the opportunity to settle the score and get revenge for Leo’s rudeness.  Kate goes to the hospital to claim him as her husband and she brings him home for extra help/income so she can finish studying for her nursing exam.  Leo works as part of a construction crew, cooks dinner for the family, and cleans the house… all for the first time in his life.  What started as a fairly simple lie that was only supposed to last for a few weeks soon turns into a life that Kate never expected, as she watches Leo turn from an arrogant son of privilege to a hard-working, dedicated family man.

This gender-reversed remake of the 1987 film is fun and endearing; it allows viewers a chance to enjoy a simple story that unfolds with lots of laughs.  Derbez and Faris play well off each other, balancing wit, sarcasm, and opportunity to create a fun-filled adventure.  The humor is genuine and plentiful, and while there is some innuendo around Leo’s character, there is nothing crass that pushes the humor too far.  Overboard is a hilarious movie built around an unexpectedly sweet story.
