“Amen.”

From So B. It.

10-year-old Heidi (Talitha Bateman) and her mother (Jessie Collins) live in the Nevada apartment which they share with their neighbor, Bernadette (Alfre Woodard), through an open maintenance door.  Life is perfect for Heidi except for a few small problems… Mama only speaks 22 words and Bernadette is terrified to leave the apartment.  Bernadette has homeschooled Heidi and does all their shopping over the phone with a credit card, and Heidi is content with the life she’s known since birth until her severely-autistic mother suddenly adds a new word to her vocabulary.  In a desperate attempt to find out what the new word means and also where her mother came from, Heidi sets off on a solo trip to New York.  Heidi is trying to find any hint as to where she comes from based off a few old, mysterious photographs.  After running away on her adventure, this little girl must use her wit and luck to navigate the people and the journey if she has any chance of unraveling the mystery that is her mother’s past.  The closer she gets to solving a mystery the more complicated it becomes.

The story is both sweet and heartbreaking; funny moments are equally balanced with the heart-wrenching to create a story that is unique and enthralling.  Young Bateman carries her role well acting with dedication and honesty that makes her character come alive, as does Collins.  The story is full of twists and turns keep it interesting balancing flashbacks with the present in a way that just makes everything more endearing for the viewer.  Some of the scenes may be too intense for very young viewers, but only in a way that seems so authentic to be frightening; overall, the PG-13 rating seems too strong for the movie.  Even though this movie is based on a child’s book, the story will have you on the edge of your seat regardless of age.  So B. It is definitely not a movie to be missed!
