From Death Wish.
When Dr. Paul Kersey (Bruce Willis) is not working as a Chicago trauma surgeon, he can be found spending time with his wife, Lucy (Elisabeth Shue) and daughter, Jordan (Camila Morrone). After going out to dinner to celebrate Jordan’s acceptance into NYU the family makes plans to meet with Paul’s brother (Vincent D’Onofrio) for another dinner the following week to celebrate Paul’s birthday; the valet attendant overhears both the day and time that the family will be celebrating as he goes to get their car. When an emergency at work causes Paul to call off his birthday dinner, Lucy and Jordan are left with a free evening at home. Unfortunately, this leaves the two home alone when three armed men break in expecting an empty house; the horrible situation soon turns from bad to worse when Lucy is killed and Jordan is gravely injured. In an instant, Dr. Kersey’s world is shattered as he is left struggling in the wake of his wife’s murder. Even though it is a high-profile crime, the detectives (Dean Norris & Kimberly Elise) are left with a case that quickly turns cold. It is at this point that Paul decides to stop sitting useless on the sidelines and take justice into his own hands. Dr. Kersey becomes a hooded vigilante searching throughout Chicago for the men who murdered his wife.
This remake of the 1974 movie is full of action, violence, and twists. Willis leads strongly with a character that excels at connecting with viewers both as a morning husband and a cunning, revengeful crime-fighter. The pacing allows for the audience to connect to the story and characters before launching in with the high action of the movie. The story line is developed, connected, and clever on many levels so that it easily brings depth to the action-packed movie. While Death Wish is not a movie that will be enjoyable to those who do not appreciate bloody displays of violence, it is a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the credits roll.
