From Dunkirk.
It is World War II and the German army has pushed the British and French forces back to Dunkirk, France, completely cutting the Allie soldiers off from the rest of Europe. Currently, the only way for the British troops to safely leave the beach at Dunkirk is to be loaded onto a medical ship and transported to safety across the English Channel; German advances on land have made it impossible to go back inland while German planes bombing from above have also made it nearly impossible to go out across the water without protection from heavy cloud coverage. Three practically-unnamed British soldiers (Fionn Whitehead, Aneurin Barnard, and Harry Styles) form a bond as they try relentlessly to safely leave Dunkirk, while Naval Admiral (Kenneth Branagh) tries to develop a plan for how to get the soldiers to the safety of the British Fleet. Two British fighter pilots (played by Tom Hardy and Jack Lowden) fight the Germans from above and try to provide as much protection for the waiting-to-be-evacuated troops as possible. Back home in England, a normal citizen (Mark Rylance), his son (Tom Glynn-Carney), and another young boy (Barry Keoghan) take a preemptive move to Churchill’s naval requisition of civilian boats and set off to pick up as many men from Dunkirk as will fit on their yacht. Each group is faced with heartbreaking odds, each one desperately fighting to get home… just over 20 miles away.
This movie is not dialog-heavy, in fact the scenes with dialog are far outweighed by silent scenes; this allows for the actors to truly shine, because the story must be carried by physical, non-verbal acting. Each scene is full of suspense as viewer’s watch this incredible true story unfold on the screen. While there is some war violence, it is mainly psychological since England was so close and so unreachable at the same time. In true Christopher Nolan fashion, the story develops by intertwining the stories of the different groups, and it is a fantastic finished product.
