From Home Team.
After leading New Orleans Saints to a Super Bowl championship in 2010, head coach Sean Peyton (Kevin James) seemed to be on top of the sports world. However, in 2012, when news breaks that Sean was involved in the Bountygate scandal where he paid Saints’ players to injure members of the opposite teams, he is banned from coaching in the the NFL for a year. With nothing to do while he fights his suspension, Sean decides to travel to Argyle, Texas to see his estranged young son, Connor (Tait Blum). While Sean’s ex-wife, Beth (Jackie Sandler), and her new husband, Jamie (Rob Schneider), are glad to see Sean trying to reconnect with his son, Connor is far from thrilled to see his dad. After showing up to watch Connor’s football team–the Warriors–play a game against a neighboring team, Sean is upset to see the Warriors’ face a crushing, overwhelming defeat. Despite showing some talent, the kids are barely able to complete a play, let alone score any points. Realizing that Sean is an amazing resource at his disposal, coach Troy Lambert (Taylor Lautner) asks Sean to become the Warriors defensive coach, to the annoyance of bumbling assistant coach Mitch Bizone (Gary Valentine). In order to spend more time with Connor, Sean agrees and begins working with young players Marcos (Jacob Perez), Paulie (Maxwell Simkins), Harlan (Manny Magnus), Brian (Merek Mastrov), Dennis (Bryant Tardy), Jason (Christopher Farrar), and Nate (Liam Kyle) to help them turn their game around. Getting the team into shape is a crazy, wild, and difficult journey, but the Warriors’ transformative quickly begins to change Sean’s life in unexpected ways, too.
Inspired by real events, this feel-good comedy manages to create a story that is fun for viewers of all ages. While kids will enjoy the craziness that takes place throughout the film, adults will enjoy the humor that James, Schneider, and the rest of the cast bring through their quick, witty dialog. The action is big in a few scenes, but not in a way that will scare young viewers. With comedy that is clean for all but the youngest viewers, Home Team is the perfect pick for family movie night.
