“You can remove those oxygen masks now.”

From I Want You Back.

When the fun-loving Emma (Jenny Slate) is dumped by her perfect boyfriend, Noah (Scott Eastwood), her world is shattered. When the reliable Peter (Charlie Day) is dumped by his girlfriend, Anne (Gina Rodriguez), because he’s too boring, he’s heartbroken. When Emma goes to cry in the stairwell at work, she meets Peter, who works on a different floor and the two begin talking. Bonding over their recent break-ups, the two form a Sadness Sisters pact where they promise to call each other instead of calling their exes when they’re sad. Getting no help or sympathy from Emma’s young and in love roommates, Paul (Mason Gooding) and Lisa (Dylan Gelula), Emma and Peter quickly bond over their shared heartbreak. As she’s stalking Noah’s social media, Emma is heartbroken when he begins dating the perfect Ginny (Clark Backo), and Peter is crushed that Anne has started dating her coworker, Logan (Manny Jacinto). Both wanting the get back with their lost loves, Emma and Peter decide to help each other break up their exs’ new relationships. Emma tells Peter that she’ll try to get close to Logan so he’ll cheat on Anne, and Peter agrees to befriend Noah and try to push him back towards Emma. As Emma and Peter exchange notes from their interactions with their marks, they are able to get closer to completing their mission. However, while Emma is able make major progress in Peter’s favor, things with Noah still seem far out of reach, and time seems to be quickly running out to win him back. What started as a wild idea soon builds into an unbelievable adventure that will change Emma and Peter’s lives forever.

This unexpected romantic comedy is full of hilarious moments and genuine characters. While the story can be somewhat complex during a few points, the quick pace keeps the movie from drifting off. Day and Slate are the perfect choices for the awkward, lovable leads, and they make I Want You Back such a fun date night movie.
