“That exactly.”

From Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.

After becoming childhood friends over their shared loved of comedy, Chip (John Mulaney) and Dale (Andy Samberg) moved to Los Angeles in the early 90’s to become famous. While their television show Rescue Rangers was a hit, Dale’s desire to not be second chipmunk pushed him to leave for his own show… which quickly ended both Chip and Dale’s acting careers. Unable to restart his career, even after his CGI surgery, Dale longs for a way to get Chip to forget his attempt at a solo career 30 years ago. While Chip and Dale were close with the other members of the cast—Monterey Jack (Eric Bana), Gadget (Tress MacNeille), and Zipper (Dennis Haysbert)—time has left them distant, so when Monty reaches out to Chip for help, Chip’s eager to help. Chip is upset to learn that Monty has gotten himself in debt with the mysterious Sweet Pete (Will Arnett) and the Valley Gang (including Seth Rogen and Da’Vone McDonald), but when Dale also shows up to help Monty, the still-hurt Chip leaves. Later, Chip learns that Monty’s been abducted, so he races to the police. Dale soon arrives and the chipmunks are crushed by Captain Putty’s (J.K. Simmons) lack of hope. However, when a young cop named Ellie (Kiki Layne) sees the two leads of her favorite show, she confides in them that Sweet Pete is suspected of several recent Toon abductions, but always one step ahead of the police. Realizing they’re Monty’s only hope, Dale begs Chip to work with him to find their friend before he falls prey to Sweet Pete’s suspected bootleg operation, and Chip reluctantly agrees to help. Using Dale’s disguise attempts, and Chip’s levelheadedness, and their shared comedic genius, the two search for Monty. As the case develops, the chipmunks struggle with old arguments, but unsure who they can trust, the duo will have to move beyond the past if they want to save Monty.

This hilarious comedy never shies from making fun of itself or anything else, for that matter. The imaginary world is a crazy mix of characters, but the perfect casting of Mulaney and Samberg as the iconic leads keeps the story together. Fans of all ages, both old and new, will find Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers to be a hilarious, unexpected adventure from start to finish.
