From Last Survivors.
After the wars left humanity scattered and completely vulnerable, Troy (Stephen Moyer) left the dangers of the country’s surviving civilization and took his son, Jake, off for a life in the wilderness. In the years since they fled to the wilderness, Jake (Drew Van Acker) has grown into a young man dedicated to helping his father make their primitive homestead safe and successful. When an outsider (Jeff Williams) comes onto their property, Troy kills the intruder before he can attack their homestead, but Troy is shot in the process. As the infection grows worse, Troy realizes that he’ll have to send Jake out alone to get more medicine. Warning Jake to kill any outsider he sees before they kill home, but when Jake sees a woman, he is unable to pull the trigger. After returning with the medicine, Jake can’t stop thinking about the woman he saw who was unlike his father’s many warnings, so he goes back to speak with the woman. Jake soon meets Henrietta (Alicia Silverstone) face to face and is captivated by her attitude and lifestyle, which seems to contradict his father’s warnings. As Jake struggles to decide who to believe about the world outside, tensions quickly rise between Jake and Troy as danger quickly closes in around them. Though Jake’s refusal to abandon Henrietta and the world in which she lives, quickly plunges him into a dilemma that will challenge everything he believes.
This survival thriller instantly creates a captivating story that smoothly develops into a slight psychological thriller. Even with the small cast, the film never feels lacking for character engagement, in large part because of Van Acker’s genuine portrayal of his character’s innocence. While it doesn’t feature an overly complex plot or flashy effects, Last Survivors will easily keep viewers on the edge of their seat from the first scene all the way until the credits roll.
