From The Outfit.
In 1956 Chicago, Leonard Burling (Mark Rylance) runs a small tailor shop where he specializes in creating suits with impressive detail and craftsmanship. While he runs a totally legitimate business, Leonard is forced to let one of the local mobs keep a locked drop box in his work room. Working with his idealistic young secretary, Mable (Zoey Deutch), Leonard seeks to keep his involvement with the gang to a minimum. While the mob boss’ son, Richie (Dylan O’Brien), and the top lieutenant, Francis (Johnny Flynn), begin to get agitated by the news of a rat in the family, Leonard worries at Mable’s involvement with Richie. Late one night, Leonard answers the door to find Francis and a bleeding Richie, and Francis demands that Leonard stitch up Richie’s bullet wound while the pair hides out from a rival gang. After stitching Richie up, Francis goes to find a player for a tape that was sent to them by the mob syndicate group called Outfit, proving that the family has a rat and providing a way to identify the traitor. When Francis returns, he finds the tape missing and things quickly grow heated between the jealous Richie and the power-hungry Francis, and Francis kills Richie in a shootout. When Richie’s father, Roy (Simon Russell Beale), arrives a few minutes later, Francis forces Leonard to help him hide the body in a chest and threatens to kill him if he even tries to tell the truth. The evening quickly spirals out of control as Leonard and Mable are trapped in a growing web of lies. As the leader of a rival gang, La Fontaine (Nikki Amuka-Bird), draws closer, Leonard makes a dangerous suggestion for a cover-up to Francis, but pulling it off will put them all in a precarious situation.
Somewhat reminiscent of Knives Out, this interesting thriller will keep viewers guessing from start to finish. Rylance shines as the mild-mannered, but brilliant lead willing to take big risks to stay safe. Never dull or slow, The Outfit an engaging and fun ride from start to finish.
