From Last Looks.
When the wife of a famous, constantly-drunk actor Alastair Pinch (Mel Gibson) is murdered, the world is sure the husband did it. However, since Pinch is the lead start in a popular television show, the studio responsible for the show wants to make sure that the cops (including Paul Ben-Victor and Clancy Brown) don’t mishandle the case, so they offer private investigators a chance to solve the case. When his ex-girlfriend Lorena (Morena Baccarin) shows up at his minimalist home in the woods, begging that he helps her take on the case, disgraced cop Waldo (Charlie Hunnam) refuses to leave his secluded life to return to Los Angeles. However, when people begin threatening Waldo to stay away from the case, he reluctantly goes to LA to clear up the confusion about his involvement. Arriving at the studio that produces Pinch’s show, Waldo meets with the studio lawyer (Robin Givens) and the studio’s owner, Sikorsky (Rupert Friend), who convince Waldo to meet with Pinch before completely turning down the case. After meeting the impressive Pinch, Waldo agrees to take the case even though Pinch himself isn’t sure he didn’t kill his wife in a drunken rage. As Waldo begins investigating the murder and spending time with Pinch, his young daughter Gaby (Sophie Fatu), and Gaby’s captivating teacher, Jayne (Lucy Fry), he begins to notice subtle things the cops missed. News that the missing Lorena has been killed temporarily throws him off his game until he is threatened by Don Q (Jacob Scipio), the dealer that Lorena apparently stole from before disappearing. Waldo is soon wrapped up in trying to solve the Pinch murder, finding out what Lorena was into, and avoiding the many men (including Method Man, Dominic Monaghan, and David Pasquesi) who keep attacking him to abandon the murder investigation.
The ironic humor abounds in this unexpected mystery film. Hunnam brings a dry humor to the lead roll that creates a captivating story from start to finish. A witty mystery that will keep viewers guessing who did it until the very end, Last Looks is a must watch for fans of unassuming detectives.
