From Morbius.
Tormented by a genetic blood disease, Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) has spent his life searching for a cure. Growing up in a hospital, Michael and his best friend and fellow patient, Milo, dreamed of the day when they could live without constant treatments. However, when the hospital’s lead doctor Emil (Jared Harris) sent Michael to a school that would set him on the path to finding a cure, the boys vowed to remain friends. Despite his vast physical limitations, Michael’s brilliance soon landed him as one of the world’s top scientists on blood disorders and the creation of synthetic blood. Desperate for a cure for his own disease, Michael captures some Costa Rica vampire bats and begins combining human and bat DNA. When he successfully combines the two, Michael asks Milo (Matt Smith) for financial help to take a boat out to international waters so he can test the serum on himself. Milo eagerly agrees, and Michael and his colleague, Dr. Martine Bancroft (Adria Arjona), prepare for the testing. When they inject Michael, he becomes healthier, but when the ship’s security agents attack Michael, he uncontrollably turns into a vampire and kills everyone except Martine. Michael flees to his research facility to investigate what the procedure actually did to him, and he quickly realizes that along with super-strength and echolocation, he has a desire for blood. Sustaining himself on synthetic blood, but prone to faster regression, Michael searches for a way to fix the serum’s effects before giving it to Milo… which infuriates Milo. Brought in to investigate the murders onboard the ship when it washes ashore, FBI agents (Tyrese Gibson and Al Madrigal) connect clues that lead to Michael. As more bodies begin to drop around New York City, Martine and Michael desperately search for a way to reverse the serum and stop the murderous monster they’ve unintentionally created before time runs out.
This origin film focuses on the anti-hero side of Morbius’ character rather than the villain role he plays in other superhero comics. The special effects are very impressive making the transformation between human and monster seamless. Leto manages to bring humor and heart to his character without losing the terrifying vampire attitude. While the nature of Morbius will make it not a movie for everyone, Marvel fans will enjoy seeing the characters come to life in this action-packed adventure.
