“Can’t forget this.”

From Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Life has been pretty great for Sonic the Hedgehog (Ben Schwartz) since he banished the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) to the desolate Mushroom Planet, saving both Earth as well as his new home with police officer Tom (James Marsden) and his wife, Maddie (Tika Sumpter).  Sonic’s overwhelming desire to help fight crime has led to several late nights filled with the super-fast young hedgehog’s antics and often more trouble than help.  When Robotnik finds a way to create a signal beacon powered by one of Sonic’s quills, he is thrilled to see a ring portal open up to a warrior Echidna named Knuckles (Idris Elba) who announces that his life’s mission has been to find and destroy Sonic.  Robotnik promises to show Knuckles where to find Sonic in exchange for help escaping his prison planet, and the two quickly head for Sonic.  Unaware of the danger quickly closing in, Tom and Maddie head off to Hawaii for the wedding of Maddie’s sister Rachel (Natasha Rothwell) to Randall (Shemar Moore), leaving Sonic home alone for the weekend.  After gathering his army of robots from his henchman, Stone (Lee Majdoub), Robotnik and Knuckles attack Sonic, who is only saved through the sudden arrival of a tech-savvy fox named Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey).  After learning that Knuckles is seeking a power source that Sonic’s mentor stole from Knuckles’ tribe, Sonic and Tails race off to find and protect the power before it falls into evil hands.

This sequel to the 2020 video game series film adaptation is full of the same humor, action, and fantasy that made the games so iconic and the film such a hit. Schwartz is the perfect voice for the main character’s wild, but lovable personality, while Carrey impressively walks the line between being a villain and not being too scary for younger viewers. Fans, both old and new alike, will find Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to be a non-stop adventure that will keep viewers of all ages laughing.
