From Ambulance.
As Will (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) struggles to find a job after serving as a medic in the Army, his life is further complicated by caring for his infant son and trying to find a loophole for insurance to cover an experimental surgery for his sick wife (Moses Ingram). With no other options, Will reaches out to his adoptive brother, Danny (Jake Gyllenhaal), for a loan, but the career thief and skilled bank robber instead offers Will a slot in his crew. Will is resistant to helping his brother rob a bank, but with the window of opportunity quickly closing and the payout in the millions, Danny is able to convince Will to join the crew. Despite all of Danny’s planning, the heist turns disastrous when Zach (Jackson White), a rookie cop, shows up to ask a teller on a date while Danny, Will, and the rest of the crew are in the middle of loading up the cash. When Zach’s partner (Cedric Sanders) realizes what’s happening inside the bank, Danny and Will grab Zach and try to escape the full force of the L.A.P.D. bearing down on them. Trapped and overwhelmed, Will accidentally shoots Zach forcing the brothers to flee and an ambulance to be called. However, when Danny realizes that an ambulance with an injured cop is the perfect getaway vehicle, they hijack Zach’s life-saving ride and the skilled EMT Cam (Eiza González) for their escape. While brazen police Captain Monroe (Garret Dillahunt) and FBI agent Clark (Keir O’Donnell) quickly realize Danny’s plan and chase down the ambulance, the police refuse to do anything that could threaten Zach and Cam’s life. Pursued by police at every turn, Will struggles to hold his decency as Danny spirals more and more out of control.
This latest action movie from director Michael Bay might not be realistic, but it is definitely fun to watch. The drone camera work is breathtaking and amazingly unique, helping connect the small ambulance setting to the high-stakes world. Gyllenhaal and Abdul-Mateen share scenes with some humor and heart, but action fans will find Ambulance to be an unforgettable ride.
