“Goodbye.”

From Wander Darkly.

After the birth of their daughter, Adrienne (Sienna Miller) is struggling to connect with longtime boyfriend, Matteo (Diego Luna).  After their first date in months ends in an argument, the threat of a break up, and a car accident, Adrienne wakes up, disembodied, staring at her dead body in the emergency room.  Adrienne follows her body and transitions through the morgue, her funeral, and even her parents (Beth Grant and Brett Rice), raising her daughter in the future.  Tormented by the pain of watching her loved ones fall apart after her death, but unable to escape the cycle, Adrienne plans to jump off a bridge in an attempt to stop the nightmare.  Matteo arrives just in time to pull her off the ledge, and he then tries to convince her that she is alive and okay.  Knowing that she’s dead, but trapped here somehow, Adrienne tries to explain that to Matteo, but he insists that she’s alive, struggling to find a way to prove it to her.  Matteo decides to remind Adrienne of all the best moments in their life together, from when they met at Adrienne’s friend’s (Vanessa Bayer) party to an unforgettable trip to Mexico to the birth of their daughter.  However, Adrienne’s regrets continue to creep into the memories when she looks back on them through death’s lens.  Unable to prove she’s alive with good memories, Matteo agrees to talk through the painful ones as well, including questions about their many fights and an old girlfriend (Aimee Carrero).  While Matteo tries to balance life after the accident with keeping Adrienne grounded, she finds herself stuck between what she wanted in life and how things fell apart.  Adrienne spirals deeper and deeper in her hopelessness, leaving Matteo desperately struggling to find a way to prove to the woman he loves that she is not gone.

Offering a surreal look at grief and regrets, this dramatic thriller is captivating.  Miller fully embodies the confusion, heartbreak, and anger that her role requires, while Luna brings a steady balance to the movie with his character’s steady strength.  Wander Darkly uses every element of production and line of dialog to captivate viewers from start to finish.
