From Turning Red.
Thirteen-year-old Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang) is a devoted daughter, solid friend, and the perfect picture of an overachiever. When she isn’t crushing all her studying at school with her three best friends–Miriam (Ava Morse), Priya (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), and Abby (Hyein Park)–Mei is can always be found helping her parents (Orion Lee and Sandra Oh) run the Chinese temple that their family has been connected to for centuries. While Mei occasionally sacrifices time with her friends to help her mother, she is happy with her life and roll in the family… that is, until she wakes up one morning to find that she has been turned into a giant red panda. Mei is freaked out at the unbelievable turn of events, but when she is able to finally calm herself down, she turns back into a human. When Mei’s mother discovers what has happened to Mei, she explains that it is a magical phenomenon that happens to every woman in their family, but that it can be reversed at the next red moon. Mei’s mother orders her to keep calm so the panda will be hidden until the reversal ceremony can take place, but her mother’s strict rules about the red panda quickly pales in comparison to Mei’s friends’ wonder-filled appreciation of her transformation powers. Then when Mei and her friends realize that their favorite band is coming to town right before the ceremony, they decide to use Mei’s red panda cuteness as a way to make enough money for tickets to the once-in-a-lifetime concert. What starts out as a small rebellion for Mei quickly morphs into a giant fight that will forever threaten all the women in her family.
A drastically different story that was advertised in the trailers, this movie will come with a surprising message for many viewers. While there are some humorous moments throughout the film, the overall story seems to struggle with the weight of promoting several contentious topics to viewers. Overall, Turning Red falters with both content and ideology that many families will find off-putting and a disappointment compared to the normally captivating Disney/Pixar collaborations.
