“Goodbye.”

From Let Him Go.

When James (Ryan Bruce) dies in an accident, life is shattered for his young wife, Lorna (Kayli Carter), infant son, Jimmy, and his parents, George (Kevin Costner) and Margaret (Diane Lane).  A few years later, when Lorna remarries Donnie Weboy (Will Brittain), George and Margaret try to be happy for Lorna, but they are greatly saddened to not have Jimmy (Bram Hornung and Otto Hornung), living on the family’s ranch anymore.  Margaret is hit hardest by Jimmy’s absence, but when she witnesses Donnie hitting Lorna and Jimmy, she goes to speak with Lorna about the incident, but all she finds is an empty apartment and news that Donnie moved them all back to be with his family.  Unwilling to leave Jimmy with Donnie, Margaret convinces George to go with her to bring their grandson back to safety.  With no idea what part of North Dakota Donnie’s family is from, George reaches out to old colleagues in law enforcement for help locating Donnie’s family, and the two set out.  A young Native American named Peter (Booboo Stewart) is able to point them in the direction of Donnie’s uncle, Bill (Jeffrey Donovan), but he warns them to be careful of the Weboy family.  When George and Margaret find Bill, he offers to show them how to get to the Weboy ranch, where Donnie and Lorna are staying.  When they arrive at the ranch with Bill, George and Margaret get to meet Donnie’s mother, Blanche (Lesley Manville), and his brothers (Connor Mackay and Adam Stafford), and they quickly realize that Blanche only cares only about keeping her family with her, by any heartless means necessary.

This drama is slow to develop, but it does build to an unforgettable finish. Costner and Lane are very easy to relate to, while they create a solid focus for the film.  Let Him Go is an interesting look at how far one family is willing to go to save someone they love.
