From Scream.
When teenager Tara (Jenna Ortega) is attacked and almost killed by someone wearing a Ghostface mask, her estranged older sister, Sam (Melissa Barrera), immediately races back to Woodsboro, California with her boyfriend, Richie (Jack Quaid), in tow. Sam has tried to distance herself as much as possible from the terrible murders–and the Stab movie franchise they inspired–that put Woodsboro on the map over twenty years ago, but it soon becomes apparent that a new killer has donned the mask to kill those connected to the original victims and survivors. While Sam and Richie seek out survivor Dewey Riley (David Arquette) for help stopping the new killer, Tara’s close-knit group of friends (Sonia Ben Ammar, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, and Dylan Minnette) try to figure out who among them is the killer since the original killer, Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), attacked his closest friends. As the Sheriff (Marley Shelton) tries to keep Tara safe from a returning attacker, Dewey reaches out to his fellow survivors, Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), warning them to stay away from Woodsboro and the masked killer intent on murdering everyone connected to the original murders. As the body count continues to rise, Sam’s struggle with a dark secret from her past pushes her deeper into the center of the killer’s focus. Unsure who she can trust as the murders from more and more violent, Sam decides to trust the original survivors for help so she can have any chance of protecting her sister.
This self-proclaimed “requel” picks up with the characters, places, and thrills that were introduced in the 1996 original while also introducing new characters to the popular franchise. Barrera leads the new cast engagingly well, but also manages to work well with franchise originals Arquette, Campbell, and Cox. This scary slasher movie can be bloody and intense, but Scream will satisfy fans, old and new, with the thrilling whodunit story.
