From Dreamland.
After his father abandoned him and his mother for Mexico, Eugene (Finn Cole) spent all his time dreaming of a life filled with excitement just like he finds in all his detective stories. Eugene’s mother, Olivia (Kerry Condon), soon remarries a local deputy, George (Travis Fimmel), and when they have Phoebe (Darby Camp) a few years later, the spunky girl keeps Eugene on his toes. However, life in Bismark, Texas is far from easy, especially when the droughts and farm-destroying dust storms fall on the land when Eugene is seventeen. While everyone around them slips deeper into poverty, Eugene and his friend, Joe (Stephen Luc Dinh), are captivated by the news of a $10,000 reward for the capture of the notorious bank robbers and wanted killers, Allison Wells (Margot Robbie) and Perry Montroy (Garrett Hedlund). As the town creates search parties for the fugitive, Eugene is left feeling trapped between boyhood and adulthood, but when he goes out to the family’s abandoned-since-the-drought barn and finds an injured Allison, everything instantly changes. While Eugene tends to Allison‘s wounds, she swears that she’s not a murderer, but she offers him $20,000 if he will help her get to safety and freedom in Mexico. As Eugene tries to decide if he believes Allison or the reports that his deputy stepfather brings home, he also finds himself falling for the charming, beautiful bank robber. With the search parties slowly closing in, Eugene decides to help Allison journey to Mexico, but their fated escape from the law quickly turns into more than he ever imagined.
Filled with a solid cast and impressive scenery, this sad romance definitely leaves an impression. As the story develops, viewers will find themselves captivated by Robbie and Finn, despite the expected outcome. Dreamland is a historical drama filled with romance and fantasy that serve as a reminder of the promise of youth.
