From Someone Great.
Despite being together and in love for nine years, when Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) lands her dream job in San Francisco, her boyfriend, Nate (LaKeith Stanfield), tells her that he doesn’t want to leave New York City, so the two break up. Spiraling out of control after the break up, Jenny reaches out in desperation to her best friends, Erin (DeWanda Wise) and Blair (Brittany Snow), to help her get through the specifically rough day. When the trio learns that Neon Classic will be putting on a pop-up show that night, Jenny asks her friends to go with her as an awesome last memory before she moves away, so then the trio just have to find a way to get into the sold-out show. While Blair goes to get tickets from her secret ex-boyfriend, Matt (Peter Vack), Jenny and Erin go to get drugs from Hype (RuPaul) and some new clothes from the store that Erin‘s girlfriend, Leah (Rebecca Naomi Jones), owns. As Jenny travels around the city, drinking, and arguing with her friends, various places and songs that she encounters instantly remind her of the long, emotional past she shared with Nate. The day filled with drunken immaturity stretches each of the women as Blake struggles with her boring boyfriend, Will (Alex Moffat), Erin with her commitment issues, and Jenny who feels torn between the unforgettable past and possibility-filled future.
While the movie does glance at the importance of building healthy romantic relationships, the real focus is on the power of genuine friendships. Rodriguez, Snow, and Wise easily manage to showcase the trials and challenges of growing up in a world as confusing as today. Someone Great seems a bit cliche at times, but there are some definitely hilarious moments that will leave viewers laughing.
