“Any idea who that girl is?”

From Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs.

After mistakenly attacking an ugly-but-good fairy princess, the magical defenders known as the Fabulous Seven are cursed to be green dwarfs whenever someone looks at them.  Since being cursed the members of the Fabulous Seven–Merlin (Sam Claflin), Arthur (Simon Kassianides), Hans (Nolan North), Jack (Frederik Hamel), Pino, Noki, and Kio (all voiced by Frank Todaro)–have spent the last year hiding from the public and trying to find a beautiful woman who can kiss them and break the curse.  Evil witch Regina (Gina Gershon) has dedicated years to her search for eternal youth and beauty with the help of her cursed apples and Magic Mirror (Patrick Warburton), but so far her attempts have been unsuccessful.  When Regina’s plus-size stepdaughter, Snow White (Chloë Grace Moretz), sneaks into her magic lair to search for clues about her father’s disappearance, Snow finds a pair of beautiful red shoes that she puts on before fleeing from Regina.  The lost and scared Snow finds herself in the woods at the home of seven green dwarfs, but when she sees her reflection in a mirror, she realizes that the shoes have made her thin and beautiful.  Snow asks Merlin and the dwarfs for help in finding her father, and they are happy to help the beautiful girl with the hopes of getting a magical kiss.  However, unwilling to let her only pair of successfully-magic shoes stay with Snow, Regina reaches out to Prince Average (Jim Rash) to capture Snow and bring back the shoes.  Craziness ensues as Snow and the dwarfs all try to stay out of Regina and Average’s grasp while also learning to look at what’s on the inside instead of just the outside.

This latest retelling of the classic story manages to place a new, unique spin on the fairy tale that will truly resonate with today’s viewers.  The animation is fun and impressive, especially when combined with the talented voice cast.  Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs is the surprisingly entertaining comedy that families didn’t know they needed.
