From Rim of the World.
Terrified of almost everything and haunted by his dad’s death, Alex (Jack Gore) is perfectly content to spend his life in his room on his computer. However, when his mom forces him to go to camp, Alex suddenly finds himself at Rim of the World Adventure Camp surrounded by peppy, yet unprofessional counselors (such as King Bach) and a wide variety of campers. Trying to build up the courage to talk to the quiet camper Zhenzhen (Miya Cech), Alex follows her into the woods. The entitled Dariush (Benjamin Flores Jr.) follows Alex and begins to bully him, but thankfully, Gabriel (Alessio Scalzotto) shows up and stops Dariush, and then the kids hear a series of sonic booms coming from above. Realizing that something is very wrong, the four kids race back to find they’ve already been left behind in an evacuation. When an International Space Station escape pod lands nearby, the kids go to investigate and find astronaut Major Collins (Lynn Collins) clinging to life. Collins gives a key to Alex and tells the kids they have to get the key to a NASA facility over seventy miles away, because the key is the only way to stop the alien invasion. Scared, but with no other options, Alex, Zhenzhen, Gabriel, and Dariush set off to deliver the key to the facility; they quickly realize that they only can count on each other if they want to have any chance of saving the world.
This coming-of-age sci-fi comedy has some funny moments and impressive special effects, but it seems to get lost in the dialog and plot. The young leads are talented, but their crudeness and attitudes makes it difficult for viewers to connect with them. Rim of the World has a few enjoyable elements, but unfortunately, it doesn’t ever seem to be able to fully get off the ground.
