From Cinderella.
Despite being put down by everyone in her life, Ella (Camila Cabello) clings to her dream of one day opening a shop to sell the dresses she makes. While Vivian (Idina Menzel), Ella’s stepmother, is focused primarily on finding wealthy husbands for her daughters (Maddie Baillio and Charlotte Spencer), Ella spends her time caring for the house and designing dresses. In the nearby castle, King Rowan (Pierce Brosnan) is worried both about the lack of maturity he sees from heir to the throne, Prince Robert (Nicholas Galitzine), and the constant challenges to the laws posed by Princess Gwen (Tallulah Greive). Despite Queen Beatrice (Minnie Driver) trying to calm Rowan’s fears, the king pushes Robert to grow up and find a queen in preparation for when he’ll take over the kingdom. When the town crier (Doc Brown) announces that the royal family is hosting a ball to find Robert a bride, Ella and all the other single women begin preparing for the fast-approaching party. Just wanting to enjoy life with his friends (Jenet Le Lacheur, Fra Fee, and Luke Latchman), Robert disguises himself as a peasant and travels into the village where he meets Ella as she’s unsuccessfully trying to sell one of her dresses. The two feel an instant connection and make plans to meet at the ball, but when Vivian destroys Ella’s gown, she’s sure that she’ll miss the party completely. However, when Ella’s Fabulous Godmother (Billy Porter) shows up, Ella is shocked to be given a gorgeous gown, a pumpkin-turned-carriage, and mice-turned-human-coachmen (James Corden, Romesh Ranganathan, and James Acaster). The magical night brings Ella to all her wildest dreams, but it also forces her to decide which dream to follow.
While set in a classical world, the soundtrack and ideas are modern, which makes for an somewhat muddled story. The music is fun with vocal powerhouses Cabello and Menzel leading multiple numbers, but it isn’t enough to distinguish this remake from the countless others. This movie isn’t terrible and has several enjoyable elements, but overall, Cinderella is a modern musical that will miss the mark with many viewers.
