“Thank you, Mike.”

From The Ice Road

When disaster strikes the Katka Diamond Mine, twenty-six miners (including Holt McCallany, Chad Bruce, and Martin Sensmeier) find themselves trapped in a caved-in shaft with a rapidly-depleting air supply. Unable to drill into the collapsed shaft because of the danger of built-up gas exploding, the Katka executives (including Matt McCoy) send out a desperate plea for help. The only way to save the trapped miners is to bring in a massive drill system from down south, but since the mine is only accessible by ice roads and the ice road season finished over a month before, talented drivers are in high demand. Trucking company owner, Jim Goldenrod (Laurence Fishburne) is contacted by Katka to find drivers willing to risk driving on the dangerous, thawing Lake Winnipeg Ice Road to bring the drills to the mine. Jim bails one of his former drivers, Tantoo (Amber Midthunder), out of jail and offers her the job, but he also ends up hiring hot-headed driver Mike (Liam Neeson) and his veteran mechanic brother Gurty (Marcus Thomas) to drive one of the back-up drills. Katka sends their insurance man Tom Varnay (Benjamin Walker) to accompany Jim, Tantoo, and Mike on their hurried journey across the ice roads. After being fired from their previous job for punching a mocking coworker, Mike is eager to complete this late-season drive, gather the $200,000 pay, and buy his own rig. When disaster strikes, killing Jim and destroying one of the spare drills, Mike realizes how deadly this job is for everyone involved. However, it soon becomes apparent that someone doesn’t want the truckers to make it to the mine before the miners run out of air, so Mike and Gurty fight against the weather and the sabotage as they race to save the minors.

This action-packed thriller offers viewers a chance to escape into a fast, realistic, and impressive story.  Neeson brings his familiar character type to life in the way action fans have come to know and love.  While it may not break any genre norms, The Ice Road is an enjoyable action movie that will have viewers glued to the screen from start to finish.
