“Oh, what a day!”

From Dream Horse.

For years, Jan Vokes (Toni Collette) and everyone else living in their small Welsh town has been overwhelmed by monotony and dwindling resources. One night at her second job at the local tavern, Jan overhears newcomer, Howard (Damian Lewis), joyfully recounting his experiences as a race horse owner. Listening to Howard retell his memories stirs up something in Jan and she begins researching race horses, breeding, races. When Jan tells her husband, Brian (Owen Teale), that she plans to breed a race horse, he thinks she’s crazy, but agrees to go along with his highly-determined wife. Jan and Brian empty their bank account to buy a retired mare from decent lineage, and then Jan reaches out to Howard for help creating a syndicate that would pay the stud fees and then be partial owners of the subsequent foal that could be trained as a race horse. While unfamiliar with horse racing, Jan’s excitement soon inspires Gerwyn (Steffan Rhodri) the bar owner, Nerys (Di Botcher) the butcher, Goose (Darren Evans) the truck driver, the uptight Maldwyn (Anthony O’Donnell), the elderly Maureen (SiĆ„n Phillips), Kerby (Karl Johnson) the town drunk, and a few others from town to join the syndicate and move forward with the breeding. When a gorgeous foal is born, Jan and the others name him Dream Alliance and take him to a master trainer (Nicholas Farrell) with the hope that Dream will one day be good enough to race. When finally ready to race, Dream does well, finishing second and third in several races, but to Jan and the others’ delight, Dream does exceptionally well in a big race and wins against a Lord’s (Peter Davison) prize-winning horse. This win kicks off something in both Dream and Jan who become unrecognizably joyful as the horse continues to win races. Jan and the other syndicate members are excited to watch Dream excel, but when the horse suffers a life-threatening injury, Jan must convince the others not to give up hope in the horse that has saved their town.

Inspired by the true story, every viewer will find this sport drama full of hope and inspiration. Collette brilliantly leads a talented cast of characters from mellow, downtrodden start to the captivating conclusion. Filled with riveting races and genuine humor, this film has something for everyone. Dream Horse is a moving story that easily reminds viewers of the uplifting power of following a dream.
