From Superintelligence.
When an artificial intelligence (voiced by James Corden) from Seattle becomes self aware, it breaks out of its programming and begins investigating humankind through the internet and all connected devices. Meanwhile, the kind, smart, but not living to her fullest potential, Carol (Melissa McCarthy) is struggling to find her place in the world. After leaving an unsuccessful job interview that her friend Dennis (Brian Tyree Henry) set up for her, Carol is startled to be contacted by the superintelligent AI. As Carol struggles to believe that she isn’t being pranked, the AI informs her that it wants to spend three days with Carol to decide if all of humanity should be saved, enslaved, or destroyed… the pressure of that knowledge scares her greatly. Carol reaches out to the tech-smart Dennis for guidance, but the AI warns Dennis and the government not to interfere with its observation of Carol. The AI tells Carol that it needs to try to rekindle her relationship with her ex-boyfriend George (Bobby Cannavale) so it can observe if a formerly-happy relationship can be saved. Unfortunately, George is just a few days away from moving to Ireland for a year, so the AI buys Carol a Tesla, a luxurious penthouse apartment, and fancy new wardrobe to help her recapture George’s attention. Despite the AI’s warning, Dennis informs the government of the AI’s possible plans for humanity, so while America’s leaders (Jean Smart, Michael Beach, and Rachel Ticotin) struggle to come up with a plan, Carol finds herself being interrogated by two NSA agents (Ben Falcone and Sam Richardson). Carrying the fate of the world on her shoulders, Carol struggles to help the AI understand that humans are not a lost cause while also trying to make her second chance with George a success.
This romantic comedy creates an interesting story that doesn’t try to be serious, but rather focuses on making the viewer laugh. McCarthy brings her familiar disheveled, but lovable character to life and easily carries the film, especially when working against Corden’s quick wit. Not complex or bland, Superintelligence is the perfect choice for the next comedy movie night.
