“We’re good.”

From Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Twenty five years ago, troubled young lovers Cletus and Frances were ripped apart so she could be taken for evil testing for her ability to create a super sonic scream. Now in the present, Frances (Naomie Harris) has been locked away as a test subject and Cletus (Woody Harrelson) has been placed on death row for the terrible crimes he committed as a serial killer. While reporter Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) tries to balance his life living with the alien symbiote Venom living inside him, he is surprised to learn from police Detective Mulligan (Stephen Graham) that Cletus has promised to confess with Eddie and only Eddie. Eddie’s first interview isn’t very fruitful until Vernon figures out where Cletus’ burial ground is located, which brings Cletus’ execution even closer. While Eddie’s ex-fiancé Anne (Michelle Williams) announces that she is engaged to Dan (Reid Scott), it places even more strain on Venom and Eddie’s relationship as the two differ on how to move forward in life without her. When Eddie goes to interview Cletus for the final time, Venom lashes out at the killer and Cletus bites Eddie, allowing a small bit of symbiote-infused blood to infect Cletus and create a new red symbiote known as Carnage. With Carnage’s help, Cletus is able to escape prison and free Frances, leaving a trail of death behind him. Carnage and Cletus want revenge on Venom and Eddie, so the reporter and his symbiote must find a way to work together again in they want to have any chance of stopping Carnage.

This sequel to the 2018 origin story again focuses on the anti-hero side of Venom’s character rather than the villain role he plays in other superhero movies and comics. Hardy and Harrelson bring their warring personalities–and symbiote alter egos with the help of the impressive special effects–to life in a way that keeps the story engaging. Filled with dark humor, grit, and a bit of blood, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is a must see for any Marvel fan seeking something a bit different.
