From Cherry.
When an unnamed young man (Tom Holland) meets Emily (Ciara Bravo) in a boring class, the two soon fall in love and enter a tumultuous teen romance. However, when Emily breaks up with the young man to go to college in Montreal, he decides to join the army instead of staying stuck in his life with friends Joe (Michael Gandolfini) and James (Forrest Goodluck). When Emily comes to say goodbye before she leaves for college, she instead announces to the young man that she loves him and the two get married before he goes away to basic training. Basic is a grueling challenge though the young man is able to make friends with a fellow medic (Jeff Wahlberg) before being sent to the warfront in the Middle East. While his time as a medic initially seems like a dangerous vacation, several attacks nearly shatter the young man as he fights to hold on until his unit’s service is finished. After getting home the young man struggles with PTSD, one thing leads to another with medication and pain management, and soon both he and Emily find themselves addicted to heroin. After ripping off their drug dealer (Jack Reynor), the young man decides to rob a bank to get the money. However, when he sees how successful the robbery goes, the young man continues robbing banks to cover their drug habit in a cycle that draws closer and closer to destroying both him and his young wife.
An interesting story overall, but the wide variety of cinematography styles and elements in the first half of the movie makes for a mind-bending experience. Holland is an easy to follow lead even though the movie feels like an experimental movie most times. While the first portion of the film is confusing and almost off-putting, the second half is a totally captivating experience. Cherry is a film quite unlike any other that will stay with viewers long after the credits roll because it showcases the horror of war that youth often experience.
