From Cry Macho.
After heartbreak and an accident left him broken and bitter, Mike (Clint Eastwood) has practically left every part of his rodeo and horse training life behind. Since he has long since lacked the skill he once had, Mike is fired by his boss, Howard (Dwight Yoakam), and sent off to drift out of existence. However, one year later, Howard approaches Mike and asks him to help bring his thirteen-year-old son Rafael (Eduardo Minett) up from Mexico, so he can live with Howard. Mike is reluctant to go get Rafael until Howard tells him that Leta (Fernanda Urrejola), the boy’s mother, is letting him be abused. Arriving in Mexico in 1980, Mike finds that Leta is wealthy and popular, but also that Rafael has run away to live on the street. Leta tells Mike that if he can find Rafael, he can take him to back to Howard in Texas. Mike soon finds Rafael at an illegal cockfight with his rooster, Macho, and the boy agrees to go to America. When Leta learns that Mike found Rafael, she threatens to have Mike arrested if he doesn’t leave and has her enforcer Aurelio (Horacio Garcia Rojas) chase him out of town. Soon after leaving Mexico City, Mike discovers that Rafael and Macho hid in his car to go to America. Leta’s fulfillment on her threats force Mike and Rafael to hide out in a small village while they wait for things to quiet down. With the help of the kind Marta (Natalia Traven), Mike and Rafael find a happy life while hiding out, which leaves Mike torn about bringing Rafael to his father when he learns of Howard’s motivation for bringing his son home.
