Alex (Winslow Fegley) loves anything creepy, scary, or dark.  His love of the creepy has pushed Alex to write scary stories of his own in journals that he calls his nightbooks, and they are full of his terrifying nightmarish stories that overwhelm his mind until he writes them down.  However, after a terrible and embarrassing experience, Alex decides to take his nightbooks down to the basement of his building and destroy them in the furnace, but the elevator inexplicably stops on the fourth floor instead.  When he hears his favorite movie playing behind the door of apartment 4E, Alex is unable to stop himself from going inside.  Once inside, the illusions disappear and Alex realizes that he’s trapped in a magical apartment with a witch named Natacha (Krysten Ritter).  Once Natacha learns that Alex writes scary stories, she makes him write and read scary stories to keep her entertained each night.  Shortly after arriving, Alex learns that he is not alone and meets fellow prisoner, Yasmin (Lidya Jewett), and the witch’s magical servant, a sometimes-invisible cat named Lenore.  Alex is desperate to escape, but Yasmin ignores him until an accident in the garden of magical plants where she works requires two people to fix.  When Alex finds notes from a previous storyteller planning an escape, he begins to develop a wild plan that just might help him and Yasmin escape. However, Alex will have to find a way for everyone to work together to outsmart the evil witch before she grows tired of them and curses them for all eternity.

Inspired by the J.A. White book of the same name, this movie creates a captivating scary story that viewers of most ages will enjoy. Despite being marketed for children, there are some genuinely scary scenes to this movie, but the horror isn’t bloody. Fegley, Jewett, and Ritter are perfectly cast to bring their characters to life, making Nightbooks a fun scary adventure for viewers.
