“It’s okay.”

From Kate.

Raised as an assassin from childhood, Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has become a force with which to be reckoned under the training of her handler Varrick (Woody Herrelson). When on a mission in Osaka, Kate violates her one rule and kills a target in front of a child, it pushes her to begin preparing for the end of her career as an assassin. Ten months after the Osaka mission, Kate is tasked with taking out one final target in Tokyo before retiring, but just before she’s able to pull the trigger, she’s overcome with violent sickness. After fleeing from the unsuccessful hit, Kate crashes her car and wakes up in a hospital only to learn that she has been fatally poisoned with plutonium. Knowing that she only has less than a day left to live, Kate seeks out the man she believes poisoned her (Michiel Huisman), but he unknowingly carried out the poisoning and has no information on who wanted her dead. After recognizing the mark that got away in Tokyo and with no other options, Kate reaches out to Varrick for the identity of the man and learns that he is Kijima (Jun Kunimura), the leader of a powerful Yakuza clan and the brother of the man she killed in Osaka. Looking for a way to lure Kijima out of hiding, Kate abducts his niece, Ani (Miku Martineau), but the Yakuza try to kill the girl instead of rescue her. When Kate saves Ani from being killed, Ani offers to help the assassin find Kijima and then Kate begins fighting her way up through the clan (including Tadanobu Asano, Koji Nishiyama, Kazuya Tanabe, Miyavi) to get to the man that poisoned her. As time quickly runs out on her health, life, and abilities, Kate races across the city in a blood-soaked night of revenge.

This action-packed thriller is a non-stop adventure for anyone seeking an adrenaline fueled story. The movie’s sets and design are highly stylized, which easily draws viewers in, but Winstead’s impressive lead will keep viewers captivated. Violent, fast, and occasionally humorous, Kate is well worth the watch for any action fan.
