From Beckett.
Beckett (John David Washington) and his girlfriend April (Alicia Vikander) are enjoying a beautiful vacation in Greece. The couple left their Athens hotel when protests over Dimos Karras (Flippos Ioannidis), the kidnapped nephew of rising revolutionary politician (Yorgos Pirpassopoulos) moved into the city, and they decided to tour the quiet countryside instead. When Beckett falls asleep while driving on a back road, the car runs off the road and down a hill, before crashing into a small house. Beckett watches as the house’s two occupants run when they see the crash, leaving the injured Beckett and April behind. When he wakes up in the hospital, the local police (Panos Koronis and Omiros Poulakis) inform him that April was killed in the crash. Heartbroken after April’s death, Beckett struggles to finish with the police and their reports, but when the officers continually insist that the house was empty, something shifts in how they treat Beckett. After being released, Beckett goes to the crash site to mourn April, but shortly after he arrives a woman (Lena Kitsopoulou) and the lead police officer arrive and start shooting at him. Beckett runs and begins trying to get back to the US embassy in Athens, but while he is able to find help from some kind people (including Vicky Krieps, Andreas Marianos, and Maria Votti), the corrupt officer and female shooter always seem to be one step ahead of Beckett. Finally making it to the American embassy, Beckett’s case is assigned to Steven Tynan (Boyd Holbrook) who tries to help Beckett sort through who is trying to kill him, but Beckett quickly realizes that his safety is tied to the kidnapped boy’s life.
This action movie provides a slow-burning thriller with a rather unique soundtrack that creates an almost nostalgic movie experience. Washington easily carries the lead while bringing a believable normalcy to the main character, both in his actions and reactions. While not filled with constant action, Beckett is a captivating thriller that refuses to let viewers go until the credits roll.
