“I don’t hardly recognize it anymore.”

From Stillwater.

Five years ago, Bill Baker (Matt Damon) watched his daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin) board a plane from his lifelong home of Stillwater, Oklahoma so she could attend college in France. However, their lives are soon shattered when Allison is convicted of the murder of her girlfriend and sentenced to years in prison in Marseille, France. Currently between steady jobs, Bill frequently takes trips to France to visit Allison and bring her clothes and other items from his mother-in-law, Sharon (Deanna Dunagan). Allison has always claimed her innocence in the murder, insisting that a young man she met at a bar–named Akim (Idir Azougli)–is the real killer, but the police and Allison’s lawyer (Anne Le Ny) were never able to find proof that Akim existed. On Bill’s most recent trip to France, his hotel room is right next to the just-moved from Paris Virginie (Camille Cottin) and her sweet daughter, Maya (Lilou Siauvaud), who befriends Bill. When Allison asks Bill to deliver a letter to her lawyer, he quickly makes an appointment to speak with the lawyer because he can see it’s very important to his daughter. The lawyer is apologetic, but firm in her refusal to try reopening the case, so Bill reaches out to Virginie for help translating the letter from French to English. Bill learns that Allison has learned of someone that spoke to a man named Akim that boasted about getting away with murder. Desperate to help his daughter get out of prison, Bill decides to search for Akim on his own, even finding a retired officer (Moussa Maaskri) willing to run a DNA test to get the case reopened. Leaving everything behind for his daughter, Bill soon finds himself working construction, renting a room from Virginie, and creating a life in France while searching for Akim. The closer Bill comes to finding Akim, the stronger a pull he feels between the life he’s created and the danger of losing it all to save Allison.

This dramatic thriller is impressive in its ability to keep the viewer engaged through a primarily-slower story. Damon’s transformation for his lead character is captivating and definitely the movie’s driving force. Set in impressive locations and with a talented cast, Stillwater is a must-watch movie that viewers will find unforgettable.
