“Okay, Gabi, let’s get to work.”

From Vivo.

Kinkajou Vivo (Lin-Manuel Miranda) has been living a wonderful life, performing music in Havana, Cuba with Andrés (Juan de Marcos González). However, when Andrés receives a letter from his long lost love, Marta (Gloria Estefan), inviting him to Miami for the final performance of her career, Andrés is eager to see Marta. Years ago, Andrés remained silent about his feelings so Marta could have a successful music career in America, and he instead wrote a song confessing his love, but he never shared the song with her. Initially terrified to go to Miami, Vivo decides to embrace the chance for Andrés to reconnect with Marta, but when the elderly man dies before he can make the trip, Vivo knows that he must find a way to deliver the song to Marta. When Andrés’ niece, Rosa (Zoe Saldana), and her daughter, Gabi (Ynairaly Simo), come from Florida to attend the funeral, Vivo is too heartbroken to connect with the energetic girl, but he quickly decides to sneak into her bag to get to America. When they arrive back in Key West and Gabi learns of Vivo’s mission, she eagerly jumps in to help him make it to Marta’s show. While hiding Vivo from her mom, Gabi is also at odds with her mother over helping at the Sand Dollars cookie sale, because the other members (Katie Lowes, Olivia Trujillo, and Lidya Jewett) don’t get Gabi. When a run in with the Sand Dollar girls leads to Gabi and Vivo missing the bus to Miami, they son find themselves on a little raft cutting through the Everglades National Forest, but Gabi’s wild attitude is at odds with Vivo’s nerve-fueled strict planning. When the two are separated in a storm, Vivo searches for Gabi and the song, while dealing with both friendly (including Brian Tyree Henry and Nicole Byer) and hungry (Michael Rooker) animals.

This fun and moving story uses a catchy soundtrack and engaging characters to connect with viewers, both young and old. Under the direction of Miranda’s title character, the bright animation style pairs nicely with the music. The fun music and genuine story makes the family-friendly Vivo a must-watch adventure.
