From The Map of Tiny Perfect Things.
Teenager Mark (Kyle Allen) has been stuck repeating the same day for a long, long time. Regardless of what he does or says, the clock striking midnight sends him flying back to that morning when he wakes up. Mark has breakfast and a predictable conversation with his dad (Josh Hamilton) and younger sister (Cleo Fraser), spends some time with his video game playing best friend (Jermaine Harris), and then he heads out to complete his daily ritual around town, including saving a cute girl (Anna Mikami) from falling in the pool so he can try to ask her out. Stuck, but content, Mark is startled to one day discover a girl (Kathryn Newton) that isn’t part of the daily looped happenings. Mark searches for the girl and he is finally able to find her and introduce himself. The mysterious Margaret knows that she is stuck in a loop with Mark, but she is still initially reluctant to spend time with him. Mark eventually convinces Margaret that their shared loop captivity should include a friendship, and the two begin showing each other some of their favorite perfect moments around town. Inspired by Margaret’s fascination of time and the fourth dimension, they begin a search to find every single perfect moment that their looped day holds. As time continues to keep Mark and Margaret trapped, they find themselves drawn more and more to each other. However, Margaret’s resistance to even try to escape the loop throws Mark’s world into chaos, but it also opens his eyes to a world that he never even noticed.
Highly reminiscent of 1993’s Groundhog Day, this romantic fantasy offers a younger, fresher look at the time loop story. Allen is endearing with his quick wit, while Newton’s mysterious motivation easily draws viewers into the story. The Map of Tiny Perfect Things is a sweetly, funny romantic look at how much magic can be found in each and every day.
