From Snake Eyes.
After watching his father (Steven Allerick) being murdered, a young boy was left alone to raise himself in the streets. As an adult (Henry Golding), he became a skilled street fighter and took the name Snake Eyes. When a mysterious man, Kenta (Takehiro Hira), offers him the chance to learn the identity of his father’s killer in exchange for employment, Snake Eyes finds himself working for the Yakuza in Los Angeles. Snake Eyes manages to keep his head down despite the teasing he faces from the Yakuza, particularly the rude Tommy (Andrew Koji). However, when Tommy is caught as a spy, the Yakuza order Snake Eyes to kill him, but he instead helps Tommy fight to freedom. Snake Eyes soon finds himself on Tommy’s private plane headed to Japan, where Tommy promises him a chance at a new life. Snake Eyes soon learns that Tommy and Kenta are related and were both in line to lead a clan of ninja warriors, the Arashikage, until Kenta was banished for trying to dishonorably kill Tommy. The current Arashikage leader, Tommy’s grandmother, Sen (Eri Ishida), is pleased to meet the man that saved her grandson, but the clan’s head of security, Akiko (Haruka Abe), is wary of Snake Eyes since he’s an outsider. Tommy encourages Snake Eyes to take the three tests necessary to become a ninja in the clan, so Snake Eyes begins training under the clan masters (Peter Mensah and Iko Uwais), struggling to balance his overwhelming desire for revenge with his desire to succeed. Snake Eye’s testing is only made more difficult by information from G.I. Joe Scarlett (Samara Weaving) that Kenta has partnered with Cobra’s Baroness (Úrsula Corberó) in an attempt to destroy the Arashikage by stealing a powerful gem from the clan. Torn between his past and future, Snake Eyes must decide who to be before it’s too late.
This action adventure does well to create a story that is believable even though it is highly steeped in fantasy. Though impressive, captivating, frequent, and intense, the fight scenes are mainly blood-less throughout the movie. Under Golding’s skilled leading, Snake Eyes is a non-stop adventure that does a solid job of bringing the classic G. I. Joe characters to life in this new origin action story.
