From Old.
Arriving at a luxury resort for an amazing family vacation, the Cappa family—father Guy (Gael García Bernal), mother Prisca (Vicky Krieps), daughter Maddox (Alexa Swinton), and son Trent (Nolan River)—are amazed by the beauty of their surroundings. Greeted by the resort staff (including Gustaf Hammarsten, Francesca Eastwood, and M. Night Shyamalan), the family is thrilled to enjoy the many wonderful offerings on their vacation. Offered the chance to spend the day at an exclusive beach, the family excitedly jumps at the resort’s offer. Soon the Cappa family finds themselves on a beautiful beach in a secluded cove with a few other hotel guests. The random assortment of beach-goers includes a famous rapper (Aaron Pierre), a struggling doctor (Rufus Sewell), his elderly mother (Kathleen Chalfant), the doctor’s wife (Abbey Lee Kershaw) and daughter Kara (Kyle Bailey), a nurse (Ken Leung), and his epileptic wife (Nikki Amuka-Bird). Shortly after they all arrive at the beach, it becomes apparent that something is terribly wrong as a body washes up on shore, no one can leave the beach without passing out, and the children begin to age rapidly. After just a few hours, eleven-year-old Maddox quickly becomes a teenager (Thomasin McKenzie), with six-year-olds Trent (Alex Wolff) and Kara (Eliza Scanlen) growing quickly behind her. The group quickly figure out that everyone is aging two years for every hour they spend on the beach. For the people trapped on the beach, the quickly passing years, dangerous escape attempts, and arguments between each other all combine to make the cove the final resting place for more and more guests. Running out of time and options, Guy and Prisca fight to save their children from the horror of their fast-approaching fate, but learning the truth behind the beach continuously and dangerously stays out of reach.
This latest from thriller director M. Night Shyamalan offers a twisted look at how time is both important and fleeting. The gorgeous scenery pairs perfectly with the talented cast and plot development to create a genuinely chilling film. While the end twist is not totally unexpected, Old easily creates a story that will keep viewers on the edge of the seat from start to finish.
