From Fatherhood.
Matt Logelin (Kevin Hart) and his wife Liz (Deborah Ayorinde) are excitedly waiting for the birth of their daughter, so when their doctor schedules a C-section for two weeks before the due date, they don’t think much of it. The surgery goes well and Matt and Liz are thrilled to welcome their daughter Maddy into the world; however, several hours later, Liz develops a pulmonary embolism and dies suddenly. Matt suddenly finds himself a single parent of a newborn baby, struggling with his overwhelming grief, and totally lost. While Matt’s mom, Anna (Thedra Porter), and Liz’s parents, Mike (Frankie Faison) and Marian (Alfre Woodard), arrived in Boston for Maddy’s birth, they instead find themselves helping Matt care for Maddy and planning a funeral. As they both struggle with grief, Matt and Marian clash over how Maddy should be raised, primarily the fact that Marian wants Matt to leave Boston and return to Minnesota. Unwilling to move, but desperate to get the overbearing Marian to go home, Matt promises to always put Maddy first and move back to Minnesota if he honestly can’t manage alone. In Matt’s struggle to balance fatherhood and work, Matt’s boss (Paul Reiser) allows the new father to work in a way that allows Matt to also care for Maddy. While Matt has some support from his friends Jordan (Lil Rel Howery) and Oscar (Anthony Carrigan), he struggles with figuring everything out as he raises the growing Maddy (Rhythm Hurd). As Maddy (Melody Hurd) grows into a spirited little girl, Matt finds that life with just the two of them is crazy, but good. However, when Oscar and his wife, set Matt up with the charming Lizzie (DeWanda Wise), Matt finds himself struggling to keep Maddy first while contemplating letting love into his life again.
Inspired by the moving true story, this film highlights the overwhelming pain of grief, the trials of single parenthood, and the struggles of dealing with friends and family. Hart delivers a moving performance, both through the heartfelt and hilarious scenes. Fatherhood will make viewers cry a bit and laugh a lot, but it is truly inspirational, must-watch story.
