From A Week Away.
After stealing a police car as a prank, orphaned teen Will (Kevin Quinn) is told by Mark (Ed Amatrudo), his social worker, that he’s finally crossed the line and will be taken out of foster care and sent to juvenile detention. Will begs for a second chance, and Mark reaches out to a foster mom, Kristin (Sherri Shepherd), to ask her if she’ll take Will to a week-long summer camp for his last chance. Kristin and Will both agree, so Kristin and her son, George (Jahbril Cook), head off to the camp where she works and George attends: Camp Aweegaway. When George shows Will around camp, Will quickly realizes that it is a Christian camp and he’s unsure about it, but decides to stay to avoid juvie. Desperate to keep his turbulent past a secret, Will asks George to tell everyone that Will is a visiting cousin, especially when Will meets Avery (Bailee Madison), the camp owner’s (David Koechner) beautiful daughter. George agrees to keep Will’s reason for being at camp secret in exchange for his help catching the attention of George’s longtime crush, Presley (Kat Conner Sterling). Most everyone that Will meets at camp is nice, but Sean (Iain Tucker), the leader of one of the other camper teams, is less-than-thrilled with the attention Will is getting from Avery. As the week progresses, Will is wrapped up in team war games, keeping his past secret, and trying to get closer to Avery. The truth about Will’s past eventually comes to light and Will must decide if he’ll run away like he’s always done before or risk everything to stay at the one place where he’s ever felt so connected.
This teen musical romance is very reminiscent of the High School Musical and Teen Beach Movie franchises, but with an added touch of faith. Quinn and Madison lead a talented young cast as they perform a wide variety of catchy musical numbers filled with impressive choreography. Fans of classic Christian music will enjoy the cameos throughout the film, but any viewer will be able to enjoy A Week Away as the sweetly fun and not-preachy musical that it truly is.
