“And to you, my friend.”

From A Call to Spy.

As the German army moves across Europe, taking control of France and planning to move to Great Britain next, the British military was desperate to ignite the French resistance movement to hold off the Nazi forces.  In England’s security division, Buckmaster (Linus Roache) leads a small group of men and women responsible for training, managing, and communicating with British spies in France.  As it becomes more difficult to keep male spies secret, Buckmaster tasks his secretary, Vera (Stana Katic), with finding women to be spies and wireless radio operators for the rebellion movement in the unoccupied areas of France.  Vera begins recruiting women and instantly recognizes the potential that Virginia (Sarah Megan Thomas) and Noor (Radhika Apte) have for the dangerous work.  Both Virginia and Noor are eager to join in the fight against Germany, and Virginia is tasked with being the coordinator of a region, while Noor is trained as a wireless operator.  Virginia is sent to France and connected with local contact Chevain (Rossif Sutherland), and she quickly builds a strong circuit of spies and allies.  With wireless operators in short demand, Noor leaves behind safety and her mother (Laila Robins), heading off for occupied France.  Things quickly take a turn when their circuits begin to fall apart as various spies, allies, and operators are captured.  As the danger continues to escalate, Virginia and Noor find themselves in grave danger as they constantly try to stay one step ahead of the Germans (led by Marc Rissmann) that seem to know their every move.  While Vera and Buckmaster try to find a way to get the spies back safely, Virginia and Noor face more danger everywhere they go as each possible helper has been captured, and they are left wondering who can help them escape death.

Inspired by the real women that risked their lives to spy against the Nazi forces in WWII, this movie is a captivating look back at selfless bravery.  Apte, Katic, and Thomas each give impressive life to their respective characters, highlighting the danger that the war brought to the world.  A Call to Spy will have viewers captivated from start to finish, and is not to be missed.
