From Misbehaviour.
While the world is preparing for the 1970 Miss World Competition, Sally (Kiera Knightley) is struggling to get into the graduate program at University College London. Between balancing raising her daughter (Maya Kelly) with her boyfriend (John Heffernan) and school, Sally somehow finds herself getting involved with Jo (Jessie Buckley) and other young ladies in the women’s liberation movement. Desperate to drum up positive press, the Miss World founder Mr. Morley (Rhys Ifans) and his wife, Julia (Keeley Hawes) hire Bob Hope (Greg Kinnear) to be the special guest for the competition that will feature the first black Miss South Africa contestant, Pearl (Loreece Harrison). Among the dozens of other contestants, Pearl quickly becomes friends with Miss Grenada, Jennifer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), as they both prepare to fade into the background of the crowd favorite, the popular Miss Sweden (Clara Rosager). Meanwhile, Sally, Jo, and the other women liberation members (including Ruby Bentall and Lily Newman) plan to protest the competition, both inside and outside the theater because they believe that the globally-televised event objectifies women. As the competition draws closer Sally struggles with her involvement in the planned protest as her convictions differ from those of Jo and most of the others, but her desire to make a better world for both herself and her daughter pushes her forward. So as the highly-watched competition is broadcast all over, the world waits to see both who will be crowned Miss World and what, if anything, the female protestors will be able to accomplish.
Inspired by the true events surrounding the historic 1970 beauty competition, this movie is an interesting look at the not-so-distant past. While Knightley and Buckley’s portion of the movie can grow to be too much at times for some viewers, Mbatha-Raw’s scenes give the story life. Misbehaviour is an interesting look at a highly contested competition that changed history in multiple ways.
