“That’s what I’m putting down.”

From The Little Things.

Deputy Joe “Deke” Deacon (Denzel Washington) is content to plug along in Kerns County with the slow and mundane police matters that fill his shifts. However, when his captain (Glenn Morshower) assigns him to travel to Los Angeles to pick up some evidence, Deke is resistant to going back to his former station after he was forced out five years before, but he goes at his captain’s insistence. While the captain (Terry Kinney) in Los Angeles is unhappy to have Deke back in LA, even just overnight, most of Deke’s old colleagues (including Chris Bauer and Michael Hyatt) are glad for the chance to reconnect. While Deke waits for the evidence to be released, he butts heads a bit with young hotshot homicide detective, Jimmy Baxter (Rami Malek). When Jimmy’s newest case has some unique similarities to the case that cost Deke his career in LA, Jimmy invites him to the crime scene to test the legendary detective skills he’s heard about. Realizing that his cold case is connected to the current bodies that are piling up, Deke asks Jimmy for permission to unofficially help on the case, and Jimmy agrees because he recognizes Deke’s seasoned perspective. As the investigation continues, Deke and Jimmy find evidence that points them to a repairman named Albert (Jared Leto), but they are unable to find any concrete evidence to prove Albert is the killer. Unwilling to give up, Deke and Jimmy begin an off-the-books investigation to prove Albert’s guilt in all the murders, but the deeper they go with their investigation, the more of themselves they stand to lose.

This movie offers an interesting look on the minds of men that must catch killers. This star-studded thriller seems slow to start, but viewers will retrospectively realize the pace is used to enhance the twist ending. In The Little Things, Leto, Malek, and Washington all bring their unique talents together for a movie that will leave viewers questioning everything.
