“What’s the matter?”

From The Kid Detective.

When he was a child, Abe (Jesse Noah Gruman) had a knack for solving all kinds of small crimes and mysteries, which made him famous in his town. However, when his friend, classmate, and secretary, Gracie (Kaitlyn Chalmers-Rizzato), disappeared and Abe was unable to find out what happened to her, things begin to fall apart for him. Now, even though Abe (Adam Brody) has grown up, he is stuck in a rut solving pointless little mysteries while spending the rest of his time dealing with an almost-constant hangover and the constant disappointment of his parents (Wendy Crewson and Jonathan Whittaker). Nobody, from his secretary (Sarah Sutherland) to his roommate (Kaleb Horn), takes Abe seriously, so he’s fallen into an inescapable fog of depression and apathy. When the teenage Caroline (Sophie Néilisse) comes to Abe for help in finding out who killed Patrick, her boyfriend, Abe sees it as an opportunity to prove himself once again. Caroline takes Abe to interview Patrick’s friends (including Isaac Kragten and Dallas Edwards) and parents (Sharon Crandall and Tzi Ma), but when they find a bottle of drugs in Patrick’s jacket, the investigation takes a different turn. While following the drug lead, Abe uncovered some new, but confusing leads, it also pushes him to a dark place when he clashes with people from his past, including the school principle (Peter MacNeill) and police chief (Maurice Dean Wint). With Caroline‘s urging, Abe moves forward in his investigation, but it soon becomes apparent that the only way to solve Patrick’s murder is to finally face the past and find out what happened to Gracie.

This film uses a variety of elements to create a story that is mysterious and engaging. Brody creates an attitude onscreen that is reminiscent of a variety of famous detectives, but he also manages to be unique. With a surprising twist and many comedic moments, The Kid Detective is a must-watch for any mystery fan.
