From The Midnight Sky.
In 2049, Augustine (George Clooney) is the last man left at a research facility in the arctic circle. While the rest of the facility evacuated before a humanity-ending event, Augustine decided to stay because of his quickly deteriorating health and having nowhere else to go. In the two weeks since the event, Augustine has spent his time monitoring the nuclear spread across the world and waiting for a communication window to open so he can warn the returning Aether crew of the danger. Aether is the last mission still active in the research of planet K-23 and the small crew–Sully (Felicity Jones), Maya (Tiffany Boone), Ade (David Oyelowo), Mitchell (Kyle Chandler), and Sanchez (Damián Bichir)–is returning to Earth after a two-year mission of the planet a younger Augustine (Ethan Peck) chose to focus on over the woman he loved (Sophie Rundle). However, about the same time that Augustine discovers the young Iris (Caoilinn Springall) that was left behind in the chaos of the evacuation, he also realizes that the station’s antenna is not strong enough to reach Aether. Meanwhile, the crew of the Aether is unable to make contact with anyone and they drift dangerously off-course, so that they must chart a new path home. With a limited window to reach Aether with the approaching radiation, Augustine decides that everyone’s only chance is for he and Iris to make a trip north to a more powerful station and antenna. While time is running out for Augustine, Iris, and the returning astronauts, the fate of humanity is tested by the elements and of the choices that the past has made for them.
Inspired by Lily Brooks-Dalton’s book, this sci-fi drama is filled with impressive sets and breathtaking scenery. Clooney is gruff, but endearing as he carries his portion of the story. While the story is mostly developed for drama, The Midnight Sky has enough action, suspense, and gentle humor to captivate viewers.
