“We move on.”

From The Secrets We Keep.

After surviving the horrors of a WWII German camp and a brutal attack on her way to freedom, Maja (Noomi Rapace) has tried to leave the life she hid away in the shadows.  Life in small town America with her doctor husband, Lewis (Chris Messina) and young son, Patrick (Jackson Dean Vincent) has been good, but when a new family moves to town it turns Maja’s world upside down.  First, terrified to admit it, but then convinced she’s right, Maja realizes that the man, Thomas (Joel Kinnaman), is one of her Nazi torturers, hiding in plain sight.  Unable to let him continue to live in freedom, Maja kidnaps Thomas to kill him, but she can’t bring herself to kill him.  With no other options, Maja brings her captive home and tells Lewis the truth about her past and how she’s kidnapped Thomas.  Reluctantly, Lewis agrees to hide Thomas in their basement for a night so they can find hidden answers to Maja’s past trauma.  Maja also reaches out to Thomas’ wife, Rachel (Amy Seimetz), to see how much of the truth about her husband’s past she knows, because Thomas repeatedly claims he’s innocent, and it is forcing Lewis and Maja to question everything.  However, the longer they hold Thomas captive, the more secrets begin to pile up between Maja and Lewis as the The truth of Maja’s past threatens to tear them apart.

This thriller begins to build tension from the opening scene all the way to the unexpected ending.  Viewers will find it interesting to watch the idyllic world shattered by the secrets of the past, especially with Rapace’s captivating performance.  The main character’s flashbacks are traumatic and could be too much for certain viewers, but overall the film is mainly gore-free.  The Secrets We Keep is a movie that will keep viewers on the edge of their seat until the credits roll.
