From 2067.
After natural disasters and the following destruction of practically all trees, the world has plunged into death, darkness, and destruction as artificial oxygen is the only way for humanity to breathe. The artificially-sustained life is filled with danger as humanity has flocked to one of the last remaining places with electricity and the threat of a deadly disease caused by artificial oxygen is constantly looming. Ethan Whyte (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is a tunnel worker that spends his days working with his friend, Jude (Ryan Kwanten), and caring for his sick wife, Xanthe (Sana’a Shaik). Ever since his scientist father (Aaron Glenane) attached an un-removable bracelet to his arm before committing suicide and his mother (Leeanna Walsman) was murdered, Ethan has been disillusioned and focused only on getting better quality air for his wife. Ethan is surprised when Regina (Deborah Mailman), the CEO of the artificial oxygen developer ChroniCorp, brings him in because they have received a message from the future: “Send Ethan Whyte.” Regina and ChroniCorp’s lead scientist Billy (Damian Walshe-Howling) show Ethan the time travel machine they’ve built, and he is reluctant to leave his wife, but she pushes him to go save humanity. When he arrives 407 years in the future, Ethan finds a world filled with thriving plants, clean oxygen, but no clue as to who sent the message. When Ethan eats a poisonous berry, the past sends Jude with an anti-toxin, so the two friends work together to search for the cure for humanity. However, the future is not what Ethan expected and a set of bones makes him desperate to figure out how to save humanity before time runs out forever.
This post-apocalyptic adventure is an interesting look at time travel. Smit-McPhee is an unexpected hero, but his character’s commitment is endearing and genuine. The time travel elements require viewers to actively watch the film, but overall, 2067 is a captivating thriller from start to finish.
